Dressing For Success, Plus More for sure..
Dress for Public Service Success
Portions edited from the ARRL ARES E-Newsletter October
19, 2016 edition
“Visiting this year's ARRL New England Convention in
Boxboro, Massachusetts, I was delightfully
surprised at the level of care most
attendees, and in particular exhibitors, speakers and volunteers, exercised in
their choice of attire. Snazzy uniform shirts worn by vendors were in
abundance. Business attire infused the exhibit hall. It was as if I were
attending a professional conference.
As a leader of public service teams, and an advocate for
better leadership, innovation and national unity in our public service
communications role, I make sure every volunteer has the opportunity and
support that encourages their personal success. Not only are my teams well
trained and fully integrated into the organization or agency we serve, they
also look (and smell) good. That's because expectations for attire are part of
the pre-event preparations. I urge volunteers to be "smartly dressed with
a clean shirt and pants" I also caution that we must not be confused with
public safety or law enforcement personnel. "Professional" does not
mean that we have license to impersonate, however innocent our first intention!”
From ME – My comments on this..
I’m sure that most everyone will agree with this article,
being neat and clean is just something that your mother taught you.. (“Make
sure that you have clean underwear on in case you get hit by a bus..”) The
important item to take away from this article is that you do need to be neat
and clean when presenting yourself to the general public during any event. This
simply means that you dress appropriately -
clean shirt and pants, and don’t overdo it. Coming on like you’re a
paramilitary group will NOT show well with most government officials here in Ohio.
Having a clean appearance without all the hub-bub is all that is needed.
Now I know that there are some folks out there that have acquired
a badge that appears similar to a law enforcement or fire-fighter badge. I’ve
seen it worn by several persons recently at hamfests.. PLEASE leave this at
home.. It is NOT needed at ANY of Ohio’s events and it can really be misinterpreted,
and could lead to serious trouble for you.
Now something that Stan, N8BHL and I have been kicking
around is having some patches made up of the Ohio Section Logo. This way you
could choose what shirt design you’d like and have the Ohio Section Logo on
without all the muss and fuss of having to get a shirt embroidered. It’s costly
to have shirts embroidered today trust me on that one.. I’ve been checking
around and have some rough costs for the patch that could be made up for you to
sew on. The cost per patch would be around $6. Would you be interested in
purchasing a patch? Please let me know
with an email to: n8sy@n8sy.com
If we get a big enough response it will be worth going ahead with.
If we get a big enough response it will be worth going ahead with.

First, I hope you were watching the denial of service
attacks which did serious damage to the Internet today. This is the kind of
thing that can easily be ramped up under the right circumstances to clobber
connections all over our area! The key
word for us during these events is “ready!”
Thank you all for everything you do! Now- let’s get TRAINING!!!

something that we’ve never done before.. It was a true experiment that I think
worked out well, even the sound came out decent. If you agree with me, we’ll
continue to do this so that everyone can benefit from our conferences, and not
just the ones who were lucky enough to be present.
So, with that
said, connect to the presentations and then sit back with your popcorn and

More
than 200 US Stations Signed Up for Scouting’s Jamboree on the Air
So
far, 219 US stations have registered to take part in Scouting’s 2016 Jamboree
on the Air (JOTA), which will take place October 14-16. Registration remains
open for the 59th annual event. Last year, 400 US stations registered. JOTA
officials are asking JOTA 2016 participants not only to register for this
year’s event, but to follow up with a post-JOTA report.
“We
expect to have several thousand stations around the world signed up by JOTA
weekend,” JOTA Coordinator Jim Wilson, K5ND, said in a JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on
the Internet) update. “Make sure you register your station.” Designated
Scouting frequencies are on the “Guidelines for Amateur Radio Operators“ page.
“Twenty meters is probably the go-to band during the daytime. Try moving off
the calling frequency and spreading out while making those QSOs.” Wilson said
that in addition to the DX spotting websites, there’s a Scout stationspotting
cluster.
He
also suggested taking advantage of other communication modes, including the
dedicated D-Star Scouting reflector 033A, as well as DMR, IRLP with topic
channel 9091, and Echolink, with conference node JOTA-365. Doug Crompton,
WA3DSP, and Elliott Liggett, W7QED, have set up Allstar node 41760 for
JOTA/Scouting conversations, Wilson added. In addition to social media,
ScoutLink is an excellent way to connect to Scouts around the world with only
an Internet connection, he said.
“Dave
Edwards, KD2E, and Andy O’Brien, K3UK, have developed a Scout scheduling page,”
Wilson said. “You can use this to post your frequency and to pick up on other
stations as well.”
More
than 1 million Scouts in 150+ countries — at nearly 18,000 stations — are
expected to take part in JOTA 2016, engaging with other Scouts to talk about
Amateur Radio and their Scouting experiences. “JOTA is about conversations
across town and around the world, rather than about contacts,” Wilson said.

If
you weren’t aware, you can donate to the ARRL every time you make a purchase on
Amazon. That’s right, all you have to do is sign up for Amazon Smiles and you
will donate “without any additional charges to you” to the ARRL. For every
dollar you spend on Amazon, every person signed up for this option will
automatically donate a percentage of their purchases to ARRL. It won’t add any
costs to you. Please, take advantage of this great program and donate to the
