A Serious Collection For Sure

Gerry Moersdorf, KC8ZUL has a rather unusual hobby. He collects commercial broadcast transmitters. That’s right, for more than 15 years now Gerry has been uprooting them from their former work stations and transplanting them in warehouse location near his home in the Delaware area. Gerry was recently interviewed by RadioWorld and that interview appears in the January 18, 2017 edition.

He doesn’t collect just any transmitters either, they have to be tube-type and he has some very big name companies represented, Collins, RCA, Gates and so on.

He’s had as many as 30 transmitters in his collection, but has paired it down to around 15 now. He has several of them modified to operate on 40, 75 and even 160.

Gerry’s motto is never operate a transmitter that can’t kill you if it falls over. Asked why he started his collection, he stated that he simply couldn’t stand to see them end up in the dumpster.

Winter Field Day is Just Ahead
(from ARRL Blogger)

Field Day is not just for summertime anymore. Winter Field Day, sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association (WFDA), will take place over the January 28-29 weekend, and it can be a terrific time to prep for ARRL Field Day in June. The annual event’s stated purpose is to encourage emergency operating preparedness in the winter, but it’s also an excuse to get out of the house and enjoy the great outdoors. According to the WFDA, getting ready for emergency communication in a winter environment is just as important as the preparations and practice that take place each June during ARRL Field Day, and — let’s face it — it’s not cold and snowy everywhere during the winter months. Your local climate could be quite the opposite.

All Amateur Radio operators around the world are invited to participate, and there are three entry categories — indoor, outdoor, and home. The rules are similar to those for ARRL Field Day. Operation will take place on all HF bands except 12, 17, 30, and 60 meters, as well as on VHF, UHF, and satellite. The event runs 24 hours. US and Canadian stations exchange call sign, operating category, and ARRL or RAC section.

The WFDA encourages both group and solo operation, and if you’re not up for an outdoor winter adventure involving Amateur Radio, you can operate from the comfort of your shack. As the WFDA says on its Facebook page, “The object is winter fun!”

Amateur Radio Parity Act Speeds to U.S. House Passage, Heads to U.S. Senate
(ARRL Blogger)

Just 10 days after being introduced, the 2017 Amateur Radio Parity Act legislation, H.R. 555, passed the U.S. House of Representatives this week on unanimous consent under a suspension of House rules. The bill’s language is identical to that of the 2015 measure, H.R. 1301, which won House approval late last summer after attracting 126 co-sponsors, but failed to clear the U.S. Senate last fall as the 114th Congress wound down. The new bill, again sponsored by Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), was introduced on January 13 with initial co-sponsorship by Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Rep. Greg Walden, W7EQI (R-OR), who chairs the influential House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“The grassroots effort of Amateur Radio operators across this nation in support of the Amateur Radio Parity Act has been remarkable, nothing like we have ever seen before,” ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, said. “To all hams, keep going! Now is the time to charge forward with that same momentum to the Senate. We can to do it!” The bill arrives in the U.S. Senate with ample time in which to garner its approval through an education campaign.

“We’re very encouraged by the speed with which this bill made it through the House. It’s amazing that this happened,” said ARRL Hudson Division Director Mike Lisenco, N2YBB, who has been at the forefront of the legislative initiative. “With the help of ARRL members, we believe we can get this done,” Lisenco continued. “We came within a hair’s breadth last time, with 110,000 e-mails to members of both houses of Congress, as well as letters and telephone calls. Member participation in this final push is critical.”

H.R. 555 calls on the FCC to establish rules prohibiting the application of deed restrictions that preclude Amateur Radio communications on their face or as applied. Deed restrictions would have to impose the minimum practicable restriction on Amateur Radio communications to accomplish the lawful purposes of homeowners association seeking to enforce the restriction.

GOING TO CONSTRUCT A TOWER THIS YEAR

If you're thinking about putting up your first tower this spring or summer, it's definitely not too early to begin the project.

It can be a large station investment, but the first steps should definitely include deciding what your goals are, and having a good idea of what type of antennas you'll be putting up. This will determine ahead of time what the tower ratings will need to be. Remember, the bigger the antenna’s, the bigger and beefier the tower will need to be as well. And, like most things in life, bigger usually means more expensive.

Now, depending on where you live, Amateur Radio towers might be regulated by building codes, municipal codes, homeowner associations, or CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions). It's best to understand what you can and can't do BEFORE you start.

The best way is to talk with other Amateurs in your local radio club. You can also visit your local codes and permits department.

It’s always best to verify that it’s permitted before you start any construction. The old adage of “asking for forgiveness after it’s up” does not always work out well for you, or your pocketbook.

Warm Up with the January VHF Contest, January 21-23
(From ARRL)

If you’re feeling a chill in the air, it must be time for the January VHF Contest! Those in the northern tier of the US (or in a good part of the US this winter) are experiencing brisk winds, temperatures dipping southward, piles of snow or ice, or heavy rain. This means the ARRL January VHF Contest is near. This annual event begins at 1900 UTC on Saturday, January 21, and it wraps up at 0359 UTC on Monday, January 23.

The objective for amateurs in the US and Canada (and territories) to work as many stations in as many different Maidenhead grid squares as possible, using frequencies above 50 MHz — often while trying to stay warm. Contest contacts may be made using SSB, CW, digital modes, and even FM simplex.

The January VHF Contest offers Single-Operator and Multioperator categories. What’s really cool about this contest are these three Single-Operator categories, inviting to newcomers and seasoned VHFers alike: FM-only, 3-Band (50 MHz, 144 MHz, and 440 MHz), and Portable. The rules spell out the details for these as well as for other Single-Operator, Rover, and Multioperator entry categories.

All contest entries must be uploaded via the web app or e-mailed to the contest Robot. Logs must be submitted or postmarked no later than 0359 UTC on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Mail paper logs to ARRL January VHF Contest, 225 Main St., Newington, CT 06111.

Contact the ARRL Contest Branch for more information.

Finally..  How Much Do You Know About Ohio’s Presidents?

Are you aware that no fewer than eight of America's presidents have been Ohioans themselves? The only other state that can claim that many presidents is Virginia, and Virginia and Ohio like to bicker back and forth over which one owns the nickname, "The Mother of Presidents."

Here's who they are..

#9   William Henry Harrison – Died just a month after taking office. Stood out in the freezing cold to deliver his inaugural speech. Died of pneumonia. First president to die in office.

#18   Ulysses S. Grant – Served 2 terms

#19   Rutherford B. Hayes – Served just 1 term

#20   James A. Garfield – Assassinated just 6 months after taking office

#23  Benjamin Harrison – Served just 1 term. His main claim to fame is being the only president to be the grandson of another president (William Henry Harrison)

#25   William McKinley – Assassinated during his 2nd term

#27   William Howard Taft – Served just 1 term, but he did get to later served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

#29   Warren G. Harding – Died in office

As you can see, it’s tough being a President from Ohio!!

I wrote this up just for this very special day! Ohio has had some very interesting Presidents for sure.

Remember, life is short, go have FUN..!!
