Ohio Section Newsletter winners announced..

Thanks to all the clubs who sent their newsletters to Public Information Coordinator Jack Sovik, KB8WPZ. Jack submitted all of the newsletters received to independent judges shortly after the deadline of June 30th.

The results are in!

Before I announce the winners, please let me read a little note I prepared (now just don;t skip this and go straight to the winners...that would be cheating...)

The quality of the newsletters submitted made it difficult for the judges, which is a really good problem to have! Club newsletter editors put a LOT of time and energy into their publications, and take great pride in their work. I for one am proud of every newsletter in the Section! Newsletters are the lifeblood of a club, keeping the members up to date on information, and are also a great tool for informing the public on Amateur Radio activities. If not for the club newsletter, our hobby would be hidden in the shadows.

Club newsletters have come a long way, from the hard copies, printed by dot-matrix printers, and snail-mailed to every member, to sophisticated works of art, processed by publishing software, converted to PDF, and sent out across the internet. Many new Hams come to the hobby simply by visiting a club website, and reading the history of newsletters.

Since there is no Section Conference this year, I am announcing the winners in this Section E-Mail. The Winners will be contacted this week on how to receive their certificates.

So, without further delay (I really need a drum roll sound effect here...), here are the winners of the 2013 Ohio Section Newsletter Contest (in ascending order):

THIRD PLACE:
"CARA COMMUNICATOR" - Cambridge Amateur Radio Association - Editor: Lyn Aflman, N8IMW

SECOND PLACE:
"Q-FIVER" - OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society - Editor: Susie Scott, N8CGM

AND THE FIRST PLACE WINNER OF THE 2013 OHIO SECTION NEWSLETTER CONTEST IS....

"THE RADIOGRAM" - Portage County Amateur Radio Service - Editor: Tom Parkinson, KB8UUZ

"THE RADIOGRAM" will be submitted as the official Ohio Section entry into the Joseph J. Phillips, K8QOE Newsletter Award for the ARRL Great Lakes Division. The winner will be announced at the ARRL Great Lakes Convention and Columbus Hamfest, being held August 3, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. for more information on the Convention and Hamfest, visit

Congratulations to the winners, and a heartfelt thanks to each and every club newsletter editor who keeps the word of Amateur Radio spread across the world!

73, Frank J. Piper, KI8GW
ARRL Section Manager, Ohio

Division Awards Nominations deadline is July 10th..

As mentioned in the Ohio Section News last month, nominations for Great Lakes Division awards close on Wednesday, July 10th. Please read the repeat of last months article for awards and nomination instructions below:

The Great Lakes Division may recognize licensed radio amateurs occasionally for exemplary performance as amateurs and citizens by issuing awards (e.g. Wilson, Amateur of the Year).  In selecting recipients for the awards the Director may appoint a Committee Chairman to manage the selection process or may lead the process him/herself.

When a Chairman is appointed, he/she will appoint with the concurrence of the Director a three-judge panel to review and recommend recipients for the awards,  If possible, one judge will be appointed from each the Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio Sections.  The Chairman will instruct the judges in the criteria for the awards.  The Chairman will also arrange to issue call(s) for nominations.  The calls may include notices published in Director's e-newsletters to the Division.

Information made available to potential nominators will include the:

-     name of, description of and requirements for each of the awards,

-     general recommendation for material that would be helpful to support a nomination,

-     manner in which nominations are to be submitted,

-     name and address of the person to whom nominations must be sent, and

-     deadline for receipt of nominations.

Nominations submitted in the designated manner will be reviewed by the Chairman to ensure they meet minimum requirements for the respective awards (e.g. age, ARRL membership and number of years as licensed amateurs).

Deadline for nominations is July 10, 2013.Nominations may be submitted by visiting the ARRL Great Lakes Division Website:     http://arrl-greatlakes.org/awards/award_nomination_2013.html

Copies of eligible nominations will be provided by the Chairman to the Director and to each of the judges to review as possible award recipients.  The panel of judges will determine which, if any nominee(s) it will recommend to the Director as the recipient(s) of each award.  If practical, the panel of judges is encouraged to confer with each other in reaching its decisions regarding award winners.

The Director will make the ARRL Conference Bridge teleconference system available to the judges for such conferences.

The Chairman will forward the judge's recommendations to the Director for final review and concurrence.

Fourth of July..

Hi Gang,

Whelp.. It's the Fourth of July already. Where I'm located the corn is knee high and I've already had sweet corn on the cob, fantastic.

As a reminder nominations for awards at the Great Lakes Convention is fast coming to a close (July 10th). Please, I you feel someone is worthy of one of the awards listed
(http://arrl-greatlakes.org/awards_criteria.html), get their nomination in quickly.

Now, since I've mentioned it...  The Great Lakes Convention is being held August 3rd at the Columbus hamfest. Be sure not to miss this great event. Our guest speaker this year is none other than David Sumner, K1ZZ.

Finally I leave you with this thought..  Freedom is not FREE. Many died for the rights that we now enjoy, please remember those who have fallen.

WiFi.. Do you have a strong enough signal??

Hi Gang,

Because summer finally got here where the temperature is finally above 70 degrees, I found myself outside in the yard a lot more. Now I'm not really the geek that all of you think I am. I enjoy the outside things too. But, I also enjoy playing with my computer toys as well.

We have a screened gazebo in our backyard and it's really nice to just sit and watch the turkey's wander past as well as the deer and so forth, but it's also a very nice place to just take your computer and read as well.

I have a Kindle account and I do like my satellite radio too. So, as you can image, I need a very good/strong signal from my WiFi units in order to do what I want to do. I have two WiFi units inside the house and have full coverage no matter where in the house I am. But when it comes to the outside my signal strength is almost nothing. That's where WiFi Extenders / Repeaters really come into play. These little devices will extend your WiFi signal by as much as twice the range and they are cost effective. By not having to hardwire a new router outside this little box gives me almost full coverage in my back yard.

I looked at a lot of different makes and models and then let my fingers do the walking on the internet to see which ones had the best customer satisfaction. I found that the more expensive units ($90 - $100) have the best satisfaction, but I also found out that the less expensive ($40 - 70) ones will work well if you're not trying to cover the plant. So, for my pick I chose the middle of the line Netgear unit.

I found that getting hooked up was as simple as just pushing the wps button my main router and doing the same on this little box. They mated quickly and that's all there was to it. I then messed around for about an hour or so trying to find the best location in the house so that I would maintain a good strong signal to the repeater, yet cover the areas of the backyard the way that I wanted. I finally found that "sweet spot" and left it there. Now I have coverage inside and out and it's all secure.

Need extra coverage for your house or yard? Do what I did and get a range extender.

Scott..

Hi Gang,

I’ve been working on some updates to the Club Links and to the ARES websites located in the ARES section. I’ve gotten several new updates this past several days. Go check them out.

Also..  Do you plan on having the lunch at the Great Lakes Convention? If you are, please go to the Convention link on the main page and complete the form. We need to know just how many folks will be requesting the meal in order to properly prepare for it.

As a regular routine, check out the SEC’s comments. He has a very good weekly article that was just updated. Oh, by the way, if you are an EC or DEC the roster has been updated just last night as well. Make sure you keep yourselves updated..

That’s if for now.
