Push On For Parity Act.. Plus Lot's More..

Dear Great Lakes Division ham,

We are getting close and there are only three weeks left in this congressional session.

We need your help in making this happen now. NOW!!  The Amateur Radio Parity Act needs to pass in the Senate.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS!

This is sooooo easy:   Help us in the effort.  Please go to this linked website and follow the prompts:

You are one of over 730,000 licensed Amateur Radio Operators living in the United States.  Many of you already live in deed-restricted communities and that number grows daily. If you want to have
effective outdoor antennas but are not currently allowed to do so by your Home Owner’s Association, SEND THESE EMAILS TODAY!!

If you want to preserve your ability to install effective outdoor antennas on property that you own, SEND THESE EMAILS TODAY!! Even if you already have outdoor antennas, but want to support your fellow hams, SEND THESE EMAILS TODAY!!

Let me put it this way:  Current rules require HOAs to allow TV receive antennas and TVRO satellite dishes while a ham cannot even install a tiny UHF ground plane antenna. We are simply asking for some PARITY, to allow an effective amateur radio antenna.

We need you to reach out to your Senators TODAY!  Right away.

Thank you.

73,

Dale Williams WA8EFK

Work Continues to Strengthen Relationship between Amateur Auxiliary, FCC

Work continues to promote the visibility of Amateur Radio enforcement within the FCC. ARRL General Counsel Chris Imlay, W3KD, reported that meetings have been held with the FCC concerning more effective FCC use of the volunteer resources of the Amateur Auxiliary (Official Observers) program, the current FCC-ARRL Amateur Auxiliary Agreement, and the development of a new Memorandum of Understanding that better incorporates the Amateur Auxiliary program — especially in light of the FCC’s recent closing of field offices and reduction of Spectrum Enforcement Division staff.

The Executive Committee directed Second Vice President Brian Mileshosky, N5ZGT, to continue work on the review and revitalization of the Amateur Auxiliary, in cooperation with the FCC, to ensure active use of the Amateur Auxiliary program.

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION HAPPENING - Plus Lots More..

SPECIAL CELEBRATION HAPPENING – and you’re invited..

A few months ago, the winner of the Hiram Percy Maxim award for 2015 was announced. The honor went to Chris Brault, KD8YVJ, of Liberty Township, Ohio, a member of the Great Lakes Division. The Division would like to formally recognize Chris for this national honor and will be holding an awards ceremony at the Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting in West Chester, Ohio, on Saturday, November 12th at 1 p.m. Hams throughout the division, but particularly those from the Greater Cincinnati area, are invited to this celebration. We invite all ham radio operators to come and meet Chris and congratulate him on his accomplishment.

The VOA Museum will be open from 1 – 4 p.m., with free admission. However, donations are always greatly appreciated. The facility houses three museums, one featuring the Voice of America transmitting facility (the Bethany Relay Station) which is the original purpose of the building; another the Media Heritage Museum, showcasing the history of broadcasting in the Cincinnati area; and finally the Grey History of Wireless Museum, with many old-time radios of all sorts. The VOA is  located at 8070 Tylersville Rd in West Chester, Ohio.

In addition to the ceremony and reception, where hams can congratulate Chris in person, we hope to get him on the air from the West Chester Amateur Radio Association shack in the museum, so that hams throughout the Division can make contact with Chris. Details to be announced later, but we’ll probably try forty meter SSB after 2 p.m. He’d appreciate making many contacts with hams in the Division.

To make sure that the VOA is properly prepared for all of us, please click on this link to RSVP..   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HGQPYM2
For more details, please contact Vice Director Tom Delaney, W8WTD, at w8wtd@arrl.org

ICS (NIMS) statewide database..

Did you know that we have over 455 members in the statewide database now? We also have right around 3,100 certificates on file. That’s absolutely fantastic.. Do you have your ICS (NIMS) certificates on file with us? If you don’t I strongly encourage you to send them to me or Scott so that they can be entered into our database. We want everybody that has taken these course to be in there so that if they would be needed, they can quickly and easily be pulled up by me to show proof that you do have what is needed for training in an emergency situation.

For those of you who have also taken the EC-001, 002 or 003 courses in the past, please send copies of those certificates too. You never know when they might be requested.

OHIO SPEAKERS BUREAU

Tom Sly, WB8LCD is continuing to collect information on club presentations and is always on the look-out for speakers that are willing to help out and do their presentations for clubs around the Ohio Section.

You don't necessarily have to travel. With the technology of today, you could easily do a webinar, Google Hangouts, or Skype presentation right from the comforts of your own shack. Bob Heil, K9EID does this all the time! You might be surprised just how easy this really is now days.

If you've had or conducted an interesting presentation at a club meeting in the last 12 months, please send an email to Tom.  He would like to know:

1) The topic or the name of the presentation,

2) The name and call sign of the presenter,

3) The name and location of the club,

4) Do clubs usually have interesting presentations (Y/N),

5) Has your club ever had a presentation done over Skype or some other internet service?

Tom stresses that he would like this information from all club members - not just club officers!  You can email Tom at: tomsly29@gmail.com

Your participation in this program will benefit all the clubs in the Ohio Section. Our goal is to see this list grow. The more presenters we have on the list, the more interesting your club meetings will be.

To get entered into both drawings you have to register no later than 11:59pm on November 23rd. Once you’ve entered, you will be entered to have two changes at the Handbook. That’s right, TWO.. After the Thanksgiving drawing is complete we will go on to the end of the month with another drawing, if you’ve registered early you’ll have two changes automatically!!  So, for those of you who have told me that you just never win anything, talk to Gregg Gary, WB8YYS. He used to say the same thing until last month. Now he’s the proud owner of a Handbook.

To enter the drawing all you need to do is fill in a couple of boxes on the form.. (your name and email). That’s you need to do to be entered into a drawing to win a 2016 ARRL softcover Handbook. There’s nothing else required (Oh.. You do need to be a resident of Ohio to win..)   The winner will be mailed the Handbook at my cost. Best of luck to you, and get registered early so that you don’t miss out on the two chances to win!

Here's the link to get your registered..   http://arrl-ohio.org/handbook.html

Just a bit if trivia for ya today.. Today is November 10th. This is the 41st anniversary of the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was considered the largest and fastest Great Lakes ship. It set multiple records for the largest season-hauls. Built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Mich., the ship launched in 1958. It was the first lake freighter built to the maximum St. Lawrence Seaway size. The Fitzgerald carried ore between mills in Minnesota and iron works in Detroit, Toledo, and Cleveland. It had a capacity of 26,000 tons.

The Fitzgerald sank on the evening of Nov. 10, 1975 during a particularly rough storm on Lake Superior. There were no survivors or witnesses to the shipwreck. According to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the Fitzgerald's Captain Ernest McSorely reported problems around 3:30 p.m. that afternoon in a radio message to the S.S. Arthur Anderson: "Anderson, this is the Fitzgerald. I have a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a list. I'm checking down. Will you stay by me till I get to Whitefish?" The last contact with the Fitzgerald took place at 7:10 p.m. The Fitzgerald crew reported that the ship was "holding our own." Just five minutes later, the Anderson's radar lost the Fitzgerald's signal. Another call to the Fitzgerald at 7:22 p.m. went unanswered. Around 10:00 p.m. the Anderson's crew discovered the Fitzgerald's lifeboats and other wreckage, but no sign of survivors.

A Coast Guard underwater vessel discovered the Fitzgerald's wreckage on May 20, 1976 about 535 feet below Lake Superior's surface. Divers recovered the ship's bell in 1995. The bell is now on display in the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point near Paradise, Michigan and a copy of her bell was placed back on-board her sometime afterward to make her complete once again. The wreckage is considered a grave site by the family members of the crew and, as such, the Canadian government has declared it a heritage site. That status prevents divers from visiting the wreckage without permission.

Special Event Happening - Plus lots more..

SPECIAL EVENT HAPPENING – and you’re invited..

We also have right
around 3,100 certificates on file.

Ohio Amateurs in Action..

Hey Gang..  It was suggested that we have a photo gallery of our Ohio Amateurs in action. So, we now have a photo gallery just for this..

You can find it at:
http://arrl-ohio.org/action_pics/action.html  as well as there is a link to this page right from the main page of the Ohio Section website..

These pictures can include any special event, activity and so forth that your ARES or Club has done.. I’m sure you get the idea. Send your pictures to me at:  n8sy@n8sy.com  and include a brief explanation of the event and I’ll get the pictures added to the gallery.. I’ve already got the pictures from “Convention Week” and the Mahoning Disaster Drill..  I’m looking for great new pictures that I might be able to use in the next Ohio Section Banner, so make sure that you get your pictures to me.. I want a great representation of ALL of the Ohio Section.

**********

Are you getting those emails from me? If not, all you have to do is to “Opt-In” to receive them. Heck, just send me an email at:  n8sy@n8sy.com

I’ll get you added to the mailing list. There’s a link to do this on the Ohio Section website, it’s on the bottom left corner..

For your convenience, here’s a direct link to it:
http://arrl-ohio.org/forwarder/forwarding.html  I urge all of you to make sure that everyone, regardless of whether they are a League member or not, get signed up for one of these options. You can always  “Opt-Out”  at any time if you feel this is not what you were expecting.
